Meta's suite of social media platforms experienced a major outage today, with wide reports of users unable to access Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. According to Fox 17 Online, the outage impacted thousands of users, with over 500,000 reports of issues with Facebook surfacing as early as 11:30 a.m. ET.
Andy Stone, Meta's head of communications, acknowledged the issues and committed to swiftly work to resolve them. "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now," Stone said, in a sentiment echoed across multiple reports. Users reported a range of problems, with many being logged out of their Facebook accounts while Instagram users struggled with feeds not refreshing.
The outage generated substantial buzz on other social media platforms, with hashtags such as #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown trending. Some users initially feared their accounts had been compromised. "FB and IG are down. I just freaked out thinking my accounts were hacked," tweeted Kelly Bazzle, in a statement obtained by Fox 17 Online.
In the midst of the confusion, reports began to surface around the restoration of services. Users indicated via WGN-TV that they were starting to again be able to log into Facebook and Messenger, while Instagram and Threads seemed to slowly be returning as well. Despite the restoration, the root cause of the outage remains undisclosed.
As the digital unrest settled, syracuse.com provided insights into Meta's broader strategy, highlighting Meta's announcement of an April 2024 update. This would see the removal of the Facebook News tab, a change aimed to reflect user preferences for content like short-form videos over news and political material.
