The City of Brotherly Love has just opened its arms to a new addition for the Eagles' defense. Devin White, the talented former linebacker of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is now set to don midnight green on a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. This latest roster move, as reported by CBS Sports, sees the Eagles shelling out a solid $7.5 million for White's services.
In the gritty world of the NFL, White is expected quickly to adapt and potentially become a centerpiece in the Eagles' defensive game plan. The 26-year-old standout filled his stat sheet with 83 tackles, nine quarterback hits, and five tackles for loss across 14 games with the Buccaneers last season. Additionally, his ability to disrupt the passing game was evident with his six pass deflections and a pair of interceptions, one of which ESPN's Jenna Laine noted was a key play in the Bucs' Christmas Eve thrashing of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
His time in Tampa Bay was marked with high points, including his integral role in their Super Bowl run in 2021. During his breakout season in 2020, White racked up an impressive 140 combined tackles and showed a knack for making big plays, with multiple multi-sack games that season. Yet, it hasn't all been smooth sailing. White's faced criticism for lapses in consistency, with some costly errors leading to touchdowns against the Steelers and 49ers last year, as 6abc.com recounts.
Despite a desire for a heftier, longer-term contract, White will now have to prove himself all over again in Philly. With an overall tally of 364 solo tackles, 23 sacks, and six forced fumbles throughout his career, the one-year "prove-it" deal gives White the chance once more to showcase his talent and claim the big payday he believes he deserves. According to Sports Illustrated, White had bigger contract aspirations but is settling on this deal with the Eagles where he's expected to fill a gaping void in their linebacker corps and, with some versatility and tenacity, hopefully revive his trajectory towards the upper echelon of NFL defenders.
