A catastrophic windstorm unleashed chaos in Lynnwood this past weekend, as a monolithic evergreen was wrenched from the earth and cast down upon the Martha Lake Mobile Manor, according to FOX 13 Seattle. The behemoth's descent resulted in damage to four mobile homes, leaving residents to grapple with the aftermath.
The incident, which occurred around 3 p.m. Saturday, saw the tree ruthlessly damaging the homes, some while still occupied. Maria Jimenez, speaking as a translator, recounted to FOX 13 Seattle her cousin-in-law's experience, "She heard a loud bang, when she went to open the door, it was all gone. Part of the room, part of the living room, the bathroom, it was all destroyed." Fortuitously, injuries were avoided amidst the destruction.
Meanwhile, as reported by KIRO 7, residents of the mobile home park now confront the daunting prospect of a pricey cleanup without the safety net of homeowners insurance. The fallen tree's surprise attack has left homeowners in distress, worried about the financial burden repair costs will impose on them.
The destruction has spotlighted the area's precarious infrastructure, Eduardo Mendoza-Perez relayed to KIRO 7 that, "Dad was home, chopping wood, a gust of wind out of nowhere," and recounted the tumultuous event. The damaged regional piping system, ostensibly compromised by too much underground work according to Bill Rogers, a local resident, may have left the evergreen's root ball vulnerable to the storm's whims.
The calamity displaced 16 individuals, based on information by South County Fire provided to KOMO News. One of those displaced, Ivette Perez, described the terrifying moment: "Thank goodness it wasn't at night otherwise it would have been bad," emphasizing the traumatic impact on her family which included four children and a niece who witnessed the incident firsthand. The Red Cross is reportedly stepping in to offer assistance in the tree's destructive wake.
