Tragedy struck Grand Rapids early Sunday morning when a man was fatally hit by a vehicle in what authorities are calling a hit-and-run. The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of Division Avenue S and Andre Street SW, WZZM13 reported. Grand Rapids Police Department officers arrived at the scene to find the man lying in the road.
Efforts to desperately save the man's life were made immediately upon the officers' arrival, but he was pronounced dead before he could be taken to a hospital. Investigators believe the man was struck by a northbound vehicle, which did not remain at the scene, according to WWMT. The identity of the man has not been released, pending notification of his family.
The Grand Rapids Police Department's Traffic Unit is now investigating the crash, with Officer Alex Thompson being the leading investigator on the case. The police are asking anyone with information to come forward to help identify the driver responsible for this tragic incident.
