Drivers in Marin County brace yourselves for nighttime disruptions as road works on the US-101 press on, with closures affecting both the Atherton Avenue on-ramp and off-ramp. Commuters should prepare for detours and potential delays Thursday, March 14, and Friday, March 15.
The Atherton Avenue on-ramp to Southbound US-101 will be shut down from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the following mornings, while the corresponding off-ramp will be out of service until 6 a.m., as per Caltrans. For those impacted, the detour involves taking Redwood Boulevard and hopping onto the freeway via De Long Avenue on-ramp for southbound travel, or exiting at De Long Avenue and looping back on Redwood Boulevard to head north.
In addition, a lane will be closed on the northbound side of the freeway near Atherton Avenue from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. to facilitate earthwork and trucking operations, although two lanes will remain available for traffic flow. Bus services may also be impacted in the vicinity during construction hours.
Weather-dependency could see these schedules change as rain would result in cancellations. Caltrans is committed to updating travelers with changeable message and directional signs, and the California Highway Patrol will be present to ensure safety during these closures. This effort is part of the broader Marin-Sonoma Narrows B-7 Project, aiming to add continuous HOV lanes from Sausalito to Windsor by summer 2025, says Caltrans.
With the upgrade, which includes widening of the freeway and installing HOV lanes for miles, Caltrans is hustling to improve the commute between Marin and Sonoma counties. A significant step forward was achieved last year when Southbound US-101 traffic had shifted onto new elevated lanes over San Antonio Creek, easing Novato's congestion. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously and remain alert in the construction zones. Caltrans expresses gratitude for the patience and advises everyone to "Slow for the Cone Zone and Be Work Zone Alert."
