An 18-year-old Michigan native tragically lost her life in a kayaking mishap on a Missouri lake, and authorities are still desperately searching for two other individuals who remain unaccounted for. The Missouri State Highway Patrol officially identified the drowned kayaker as Melodie Roberts of South Lyon, Michigan. Her unfortunate death was reported by WWJ Newsradio 950, which detailed that her capsized kayak was located on Stockton Lake shortly after the search began.
According to reports by AP, the incident took place under conditions of rough water, which is believed to have precipitated the capsizing event. The terrible accident occurred at around noon on March 19, and the discovery of Roberts occured approximately a day later. Two men, who were part of the excursion, are currently missing, and despite finding their kayaks, they have not yet been located.
Sergeant Mike McClure with the Missouri State Highway Patrol described the ongoing efforts to find the missing men. “Members of the Highway Patrol dive team arrived this morning to augment the search process, and they’ll be doing their subsurface searching,” he stated in an interview with OzarksFirst. Authorities are employing the use of boats equipped with sonar, dive teams, and airplanes in an extensive search operation that continues to press on, despite the challenging circumstances.
The tragedy extends beyond the loss of a young life; Roberts, who had relocated to the Ozarks from Michigan just a month prior, leaves behind a four-month-old child. As the family grapples with the profound grief, a GoFundMe has been established to facilitate the return of her body and her infant child to her family back home. The scouring of Stockton Lake remains relentless, as "basically going to be using that instrumentation to hopefully paint pictures and mark targets that are of interest to them, suspicious areas or images that they see that might be of interest that they can drop a marker on and dive on that particular location," McClure highlighted in his ongoing commentary on the search efforts.
