An off-duty San Antonio Police Department officer was severely injured last Wednesday when he slammed his bike into an SUV downtown, according to police reports. The incident occurred near the intersection of McCullough Avenue and North St. Mary's Street around 4:30 p.m.
The 26-year-old officer, whom the SAPD has not named, was riding southbound on North St Mary's Street and reportedly ran a red light before crashing into a white Dodge Durango, per police statements. The collision sent him flying to the pavement and left him lying there, unresponsive. Bystanders watched as emergency services were promptly summoned to the scene. He was then rushed to the hospital in what was initially described as critical condition.
Authorities stated that the driver of the Durango—an SUV typically associated with space and safety—stopped immediately to render aid to the officer and fully cooperated with the arriving law enforcement. "No criminal charges expected to be filed against the driver of the SUV," reported local outlet KENS 5.
In an update on the officer's condition, the San Antonio Police Department has since announced that he is now in good condition and continues to recover in the hospital. Despite the violent nature of the crash that originally seemed to all but ensure a grave outcome, relief creeps into the narrative as friends, family, and the SAPD community root for a swift recovery.
