During the Thursday night board meeting, a 10-1 vote saw Gibbs removed from his position with immediate effect. Gibbs, dismissed for cause, now stands with no severance and the potential of legal battles ahead. In a statement to The Detroit News, Gibbs termed the board’s decision as "horrible" and claimed retaliation due to his opposition against corruption and poor governance by the board – an accusation the board and its supporters categorically deny.
Allegations against Gibbs included threats made against county attorney Jack Jordan and inappropriate comments toward female commissioners. Gibbs has vigorously denied all claims, framing the narrative as a response to his pointing out of corrupt practices including nepotism and the hiring of underqualified attorneys by the board.
Further complexities arose around Gibbs' proposals for resignation, where he initially requested a $630,000 payout, then reduced the amount to $420,000—twice his annual salary. Gibbs asserts that the board acted in vindictiveness, particularly in light of his resistance to a proposed $4 million settlement to county Health Officer Adeline Hambley, which a judge later deemed unenforceable, as per a statement obtained by WOODTV.
