Over 500 students from the south side of San Antonio are prepping to don their eclipse glasses for a total solar eclipse viewing party to be held at Frost Plaza in the Rock at La Cantera on April 8. According to a City of San Antonio announcement, this educational event was brought together with the help of District 4 Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia and partnerships with local organizations like UTSA, Frost Bank, and NASA.

In a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio official website, Dr. Garcia emphasized the importance of providing an educational experience for the students, "When I first learned about the total solar eclipse, it was evident we had to get as many organizations involved to plan an incredible educational experience for students to understand the significance of this cosmic event and how it relates to space exploration." Participating students hail from educational institutions like Compass Rose, Lighthouse Public Schools, and several others in the Northside and Southwest Independent School Districts, the chance to head north-west will give them a front-row seat to this astronomical phenomenon.

UTSA's Professor Chris Packham, in a conversation cited by the official city website, pointed out the opportunities the eclipse presents, "Explaining the eclipse offers an introduction to the ‘symphony of the spheres’ to an eager audience, by setting our place in this celestial masterpiece in context to our student ambassadors." The event aims not only to instruct about the eclipse but also to inspire the pursuit of careers in various STEM fields as they expand in Texas and close to San Antonio.

The educational aspect of the event includes 15 activation stations where young minds can engage with STEM topics, led by organizations such as the National Science Foundation’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory and the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology. Additionally, the day's agenda features learning about coding, robots, circuits, and virtual reality, among other tech-forward topics which provides an interactive hands-on experience certainly to entertain as well as educate students.

Reflecting on the sponsorship of Frost Plaza, Frost Bank's San Antonio Region President Dan Geddes told the City of San Antonio news site, "This is exactly why we sponsor the Frost Plaza – to host events like this for students." The solar eclipse viewing event embodies the collaborative spirit of San Antonio, drawing on community alliances that include not just businesses like Frost Bank but also several educational organizations committed to enriching young minds for San Antonio's future.
