A parole absconder was shot and wounded by Michigan State Police in a traffic stop gone wrong in Benton Harbor on Wednesday. The suspect, who was wanted for absconding from federal parole, hit a local police officer with his vehicle during the incident, according to a statement released by the Michigan State Police.

The confrontation unfolded around 1:30 p.m. when the Michigan State Police, assisted by an officer from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, initiated a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Monroe. The suspect, upon refusing to exit the vehicle, abruptly backed up and struck the Benton Harbor officer with the car, as per the information from FOX 2 Detroit.

In response to the threat posed to his colleague, a State Police trooper fired at the suspect, striking him twice. Both the officer and suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a local hospital, 13 ON YOUR SIDE reported. While the suspect has been transferred to the Berrien County Jail, the injured officer remains hospitalized.

The Michigan State Police have since confirmed that the trooper involved has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure pending an investigation into the shooting. "To stop this immediate life-threatening action, the MSP member fired his weapon, hitting the suspect twice," MSP officials described the incident as they recounted to WWJ Newsradio. The Berrien County prosecutor’s office is expected to review the completed investigation and lab analysis results.

Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat stemming from this incident, although details about the suspect and the nature of his initial parole warrant remain undisclosed.
