Philadelphia police have launched a throwback tactic in the face of a high-tech problem, offering free steering wheel locks to city dwellers who own certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles. These cars have become a boon for thieves, thanks to a viral hacking trick, but Philly's Finest is fighting back with 'Operation Wheel Lock,' as reported by FOX 29.

The specific automobiles under siege are those of model years 2012 through 2022, commandeered easily by criminals exploiting their vulnerabilities. Owners of these vehicles can now secure a mechanical safeguard, no strings attached, as long as the supplies last. The initiative, triggered by a nationwide crime wave putting a spotlight on these models, aims to arm car owners against this rampant issue, according to information from KYW Newsradio.

Statistics suggest a downtrend in thefts, with the new year showing a 37% drop, perhaps signaling that these physical deterrents are doing more than just locking steering wheels. "They lock in the steering wheel. Similar to the club that was out in the early 80's. We're hoping it can slow car thieves up and act as a deterrent," said a police representative. The sight of a robust lock may be enough to send would-be thieves walking, added the official in an interview obtained by 6ABC.

To claim their anti-theft device, owners must prove their residency and ownership, presenting a driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. The distribution is ongoing, twenty-four seven, at designated locations across Philadelphia. Interested parties should act swiftly, as officials have warned that this deal is only good until the wheel locks are gone.
