Philadelphia Rallies for Sexual Assault Awareness Month with Marches, Conferences, and Citywide EventsSource: City of Philadelphia

Philly is gearing up for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April, putting the spotlight on prevention and survivor support. A series of events, including a Day of Action, a press conference, and a survivor march, are being planned to raise awareness and engage the community in combating sexual violence.

On April 2, Philadelphians are encouraged to participate in the SAAM Day of Action by wearing teal, the color that symbolizes sexual violence prevention. This act of solidarity extends across the nation hoping to show support for survivors. A Teal Day Press Conference with city leaders and WOAR – Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence also will take place at City Hall that afternoon, where they will unveil this year's theme "United to Prevent Sexual Violence."

Another key event, the PREVENT conference, aims to tackle child sexual abuse head-on. It will happen on April 4 at Braid Mill, and although free, requires prior registration. Plus, survivors of sexual violence will have a chance to navigate their pain with support from professionals in a safe space workshop, "Navigating the Landscape of Grief," led by Dr. Jamie Eaddy Chism on April 6.

As the month progresses, the Philadelphia Coalition for Victim Advocacy is set to light candles in honor of victims and survivors on April 24 at the City Hall Center Courtyard. The event marks a time of reflection and connection to community resources. The Mazzoni Center is also stepping up providing a virtual platform for trans survivors to share their experiences on April 25, highlighting the need for solidarity, and strength.

Capping off the month's initiatives, the Philadelphia Survivor March invites the community to a show of unity on April 27. Marching from Love Park to Liberty Center, it's an emblematic journey seeking justice, and empowerment for those affected by rape, sexual assault, harassment, and human trafficking.
