Brighton, MI police have captured a man wanted in connection with a January shooting in Eastpointe, following a pursuit through the city streets that featured high-tech crime-fighting tools. The chase ended on Saturday without incident, landing the suspect behind bars.
The Brighton City Police Department initiated the pursuit around 1:55 p.m. near West Grand River Avenue and Challis Road after they attempted to pull over the driver--who had multiple warrants for his arrest. The driver was also sought by the Eastpointe Police for his alleged involvement in an earlier shooting, according to WHMI.
Despite losing track of the vehicle briefly, officers rediscovered it around 2:05 p.m., deserted off Advance Street. "Officers pursued the vehicle through the city but terminated it briefly after losing sight of the vehicle," WHMI reported. Following standard protocol, a perimeter was established, and the police used drones and two K9 units to scour the area for the fugitive.
Police apprehension of the suspect, who was armed with a pistol, occurred roughly two hours later at approximately 3:40 p.m. "The suspect was lodged at the Livingston County Jail," detailed a report from The Detroit News. Noteworthy in this encounter was the lack of gunfire from either side during the arrest, ensuring no injuries took place.
Beyond the Brighton City Police Department, the operation was a concerted effort with support coming from several other law enforcement bodies, including the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police. Additional backup was provided by the Hamburg Township Police Department, Green Oak Township Police Department, and the Novi Police Department, as per information provided by MLive. The identity of the suspect and further specifics of the Eastpointe shooting are still under wraps pending arraignment.
