San Antonio's dog-loving community is getting an urgent SOS as the city's Animal Care Services (ACS) scrambles to find foster homes for more than 30 canines rescued from a local boarding facility. These dogs were left in severe confinement, some for months, after being forsaken by rescue transports that failed to show. FOX San Antonio reported that the pooches are now on their way to the ACS shelter, but they are in dire need of temporary homes. "Living in the restrictive environment of a shelter or boarding facility for an extended duration is not conducive to the well-being of pets. The dogs are displaying signs of chronic under-stimulation, they are in need of suitable homes where they can decompress and thrive, " the report stated.
The ACS is reaching out to the citizens of San Antonio to step up and help greatly reduce the pressure on the shelter by fostering these dogs. Interested individuals can apply through an official process at the ACS website, where all the essentials for foster care, including dog food, will be provided. Names like Mila, Bear, Leo, and Jackie are just a few on the long list of four-legged companions searching for a temporary reprieve from shelter life. ACS pledges to equip fosters with all necessary materials.
According to MySA, the dogs had ended up at the boarding facility under the guardianship of various groups that eventually reneged on their commitments to transport them to better accommodations. "The animals were waiting for a rescue transport to come for them, however, they never did," the ACS was quoted saying. Lisa Norwood, the public information officer for ACS, divulged that while most of the non-profit organizations involved took their dogs back, one out-of-state group failed to do so.
Norwood told MySA that the ACS had worked with the boarding facility's caretaker to improve the housing conditions after the original care agreements went south. Many of the dogs have begun to exhibit signs of chronic under-stimulation, which underscores the urgent call put forth by ACS for the community to come together in their hour of need.
