As the San Antonio community reels from the brutal death of Kaitlin Hernandez, her family is rallying support to seek justice for the teenager whose life was tragically cut short. Almost two weeks have elapsed since the grisly discovery of Hernandez's naked, strangled body in a ditch on Dell Oak Drive.
The outpouring of community support has been a salve to her family's anguish, yet the heartache is compounded by the mystery that remains unsolved. With no suspects in custody, the family's quest for answers endures. KENS 5 reported the family's announcement of a march in their daughter's honor, set to take place tonight at 6 p.m. near the site of the harrowing discovery on the bridge at 7600 Dell Oak Drive. They shared, "The family says they want to make sure she is not forgotten."
San Antonio Police found Hernandez’s body when they responded to a missing person report late on March 12. The search led to a haunting scene: Hernandez’s belongings scattered and her body abandoned under a bridge. The Bexar County Medical Examiner later confirmed the teenager was strangled, officially ruling her death a homicide. Despite detaining a neighborhood friend of Hernandez for questioning who was seen walking with her the night she disappeared, authorities have yet to file charges in the case. In a perplexing move, SAPD had released an image of a potential "person of interest" on social media, only to subsequently remove it, leaving the community with more questions than answers.
KSAT reported the establishment of a memorial by Hernandez's family on the very bridge where her lifeless body was recovered. In the absence of a suspect behind bars, the family's resolve stands firm as they organize the Sunday night march, both as a tribute to Kaitlin and a plea for someone to come forward with information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
To further incentivize tips from the public, San Antonio Crime Stoppers has announced a $5,000 reward for details that could help crack the case wide open. In a community marred by violence yet bound by collective grief and determination, the hope is that someone knows something and will have the courage to speak up. Anyone with relevant information on Kaitlin Hernandez's case is urged to contact San Antonio Police at (210) 224-STOP or (210) 224-7897.
