A man has been nabbed following a dangerous road rage incident that escalated into gunfire on Interstate 10, San Antonio police detailed. Jason Bustos, 27, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an altercation that could have turned deadly for another motorist on the Northwest Side.
According to officials cited by KSAT, Bustos, who was behind the wheel of a 1995 Ford Ranger, initiated the conflict by "brake-checking" another vehicle. The confrontation quickly escalated as Bustos allegedly brandished his gun at the driver of the other vehicle, who later told police he started recording the erratic behaviour "for evidence." It was this act of foresight that captured an even more harrowing turn of events.
The altercation reached a terrifying climax near Boerne Stage Road and I-10 when Bustos is said to have shot at the victim's car as they recorded. Police were later able to identify Bustos as the shooter by using a combination of facial recognition technology and social media investigation, a method which is becoming increasingly commonplace in law enforcement's arsenal.
According to a report by FOX San Antonio, Bustos’ attempt to "brake-check" the victim on IH-10 was caught on camera, leading to his identification. In a display of violence that underscores the unpredictable and volatile nature of road rage, Bustos drew an semi-automatic weapon at a red light and opened fire on then unsuspecting driver.
The local community has been rattled by this brazen act of road violence that has led to serious charges for Bustos. As the suspect awaits judicial proceedings, his bond has been set at a steep $100,000. This case is yet another stark reminder of the potential for everyday grievances to spiral into life-threatening situations on the roads.
