Aye, me hearties! San Antonio locals are in for a treat as the city welcomes a pirate invasion, but there's no need to walk the plank – it's all in the name of family fun. OPERA San Antonio, in collaboration with the Classical Music Institute and the Main Plaza Conservancy, is hosting a free pirate-themed opera night loaded with bounties of live music, sea shanties, and playful crafts for the whole crew.

According to a press release, the musical jamboree will hoist its sails this Saturday, March 23 from 5-7 p.m. at Main Plaza. The lineup stars musical treasures from Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" and other high seas inspired works. Adventure-seekers can join in the fun with pre-concert activities and games beginning at 5 p.m., followed by a free concert extravaganza.

"We are delighted to partner with OPERA San Antonio and Classical Music Institute to bring these talented performers to Main Plaza. How often do you get to see such amazing live music for free?" Molly Hall-Villareal, executive director of Main Plaza Conservancy told KSAT. Aspiring pirates and enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their own seating to enjoy the outdoor spectacle that also features local vendors for dining and shopping.

In tandem with the pirate spirit sweeping the area,, a new pirate-themed playground, Mitchell's Landing, is set to break ground at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park. The playground bears a heartfelt tribute to a local boy, Mitchell Chang, who tragically drowned in 2018. Mitchell's Landing will boldly feature amenities fit for any buccaneer, including a grand pirate ship, a Mermaid Lagoon courtesy of H-E-B, and more.

"Mitchell's Landing will be the first playground to feature" a new, innovative piece of inclusive equipment, namely the roller slide safety transition bench, which is a collaborative creation with playground manufacturer GameTime, according to My San Antonio. This playscape is designed to encourage development and fun for children of all abilities. It stands as a commitment by the Chang family and San Antonio to prioritize inclusive play and fitness for its youngest residents.

San Antonians can expect to chart a course for merriment with these community-focused events, cementing the city's dedication to accessible entertainment and inclusive spaces for children.
