VIDEO: Sole Victim Found Deceased After Boat Collision Near Chimney Rock, Marin and Sonoma County Teams Lead Recovery EffortSource: Sonoma Sheriff

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday afternoon as a rescue operation turned into a grim recovery near Chimney Rock at Pt. Reyes. The Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter unit, known as Henry-1, responded to a distress call from the Marin County Fire Department concerning a boat that had collided with the rocky shore, as detailed on the Sonoma Sheriff's Facebook page.

The United States Coast Guard dispatched a rescue swimmer who spotted what seemed to be a person inside the boat's cabin but could not access the area without breaching equipment. The perilous state of the boat, battered by waves and perilously perched on rocks, forced responders to take assertive action. Rescuers, including a Sheriff's Office Paramedic, doubling as a full-time Marin County Fire Department Paramedic, conducted an intricate long-line rescue to reach the vessel, which was taking on water and showed signs of significant damage.

Upon breaching the boat's cabin, the crew faced the heart-rending discovery that the individual onboard had already passed away. What followed was an arduous process to extricate the body in challenging conditions, succeeded by transporting the deceased via the same helicopter to awaiting Marin County Fire Personnel on the ground.

The Marin County Coroner's Office has taken charge of the subsequent investigation to unravel the events leading up to the individual's death, the identity of whom remains undisclosed pending family notification. The Sonoma County Sheriff's office extended their "condolences to the subject's family during this difficult time".
