A 59-year-old Michigan man suspected of a fatal stabbing was arrested in Ohio after he set himself on fire during a traffic stop, authorities reported. Sung Ho Jin, wanted for the murder of a 55-year-old woman in Wyandotte, was taken into custody following a dramatic encounter with police officers in Akron.
After the victim was reported missing by concerned coworkers, who hadn't seen her at work for several days, police discovered her deceased in her apartment on the 2700 block of 10th Street, as detailed by The Detroit News. Jin was identified as a suspect and a nationwide alert was issued, with authorities warning that he might be armed and dangerous, and possibly driving the victim's missing vehicle, a blue 2018 Hyundai Tucson.
The CBS Detroit reported that Akron Police received alerts from the department's Flock license plate reader that matched the suspect vehicle. At approximately 11 a.m. on Monday, a "high-risk" traffic stop was initiated by the officers after spotting the car traveling eastbound on Copley Road. According to police, Jin set himself on fire inside the vehicle after being commanded to disarm and exit the car.
Officers arrested Jin after extinguishing the flames and he was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening burn injuries, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. The suspect is still in critical condition, undergoing treatment for burns that may include both second and third degree injuries. Meanwhile, detectives are working on compiling evidence to present to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for the determination of charges.
An ongoing investigation into the events leading up to the arrest and the stabbing itself remains active. The tragic circumstance surrounding the woman’s death has left the community in turmoil, with many grappling to understand the violent events that led to her untimely demise and the subsequent self-harm by a suspect connected to her life through past friendships with her late husband.
