Philadelphia is left reeling after a heinous act of violence struck a group of teenagers at a bus stop in Northeast Philly, leaving eight students wounded, one critically. Police disclosed they had found the car—a dark blue Hyundai Sonata—associated with the suspects of the Wednesday afternoon shooting. The vehicle was located on the 400 block of Roselyn Street in Olney and has been taken into custody for further examination, as PhillyVoice reports.
In a vivid recount of the chaos, Dave Carter, a military veteran who rushed to the scene described, "Fatherly instinct, military instinct kicked in so - it was aid and assist. [I] ran out over to the scene and saw a whole bunch of kids [lying] on the ground," an interview with 6abc revealed.
Captured by nearby surveillance, the troubling moments before the tragic event showed the suspects waiting in the Sonata by a Dunkin Donuts. According to a statement Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel provided to the press, the attack commenced as the bus arrived and students gathered. He said, "Three individuals exit that vehicle and then discharges multiple times," information relayed by Daily Voice. Over 30 shots were fired, finding their mark amongst eight innocent students between the ages of 15 and 17.
The severity of the incident is punctuated by the condition of a 16-year-old boy, who, after being struck by nine bullets, now clings to life in a hospital room. A heart-wrenching scene described by Carter reveals a friend's desperate pleas: "His friend was sitting there holding him and crying, and telling him to keep his eyes open. 'Stay awake. Don't go to sleep. Stay with me. Stay with me,'" according to what Carter told 6abc. Meanwhile, the seven other victims, assailants' bullets piercing their youthful vitality, are now reported in stable condition.
The Philadelphia police force, while having made progress with finding the car, continues an ardent search for the four suspects still at large. As a community grieves and a city grapples with the terror unleashed upon its young, the collective eye peers into the dark waiting for justice to surface, and the weight of unanswered questions lingers oppressive in the hearts of a neighborhood violated.
