Over a year after a fatal wrong-way crash in Cypress, Texas, a teen has been slapped with upgraded charges including murder. Destin Quintero, 18, was arrested on Monday and faces allegations for the 2022 incident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Caleb Rickenbacher and severely injured his girlfriend, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Authorities initially charged Quintero with failure to stop and render aid, but a grand jury indicted him on the more severe charges on March 1; he had been out on bond since his first arrest and was taken into custody again without a listed defense attorney for the murder or assault charges, he allegedly stole an SUV in Oklahoma and was piloting the vehicle at a high velocity of 91 mph when it collided with Rickenbacher's Dodge, as stated in court records.
According to KHOU 11, Quintero was first arrested in January 2023 after investigators tracked down critical evidence including a backpack and a damaged cell phone linked to him, as well as his DNA found in the stolen SUV, which Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman credited to God's watching over the case during a lengthy investigation.
Caught up in this storm of consequences is the bereaved family, who attended a press conference last year to show gratitude for the efforts made by Precinct 4, with Caleb's father, Gary, expressing that the constable's team "spent hundreds of hours -- on and off the clock -- to bring a suspect in this case to justice," Caleb's mother, Melissa, shared about their tight-knit family unit, comparing themselves to "The Three Musketeers," according to statements they gave at the news conference.
Rickenbacher, whose obituary described him as a world traveler studying for a career in criminal justice was characterized by his girlfriend Christina Diaz telling KHOU 11, “He was the most selfless person I knew. He would always let me know if anything were to happen, he would want me to be the one to make it out.” Diaz added that she believes Caleb saved her life and honors his memory with a tattoo of his birthday.
