Trader Joe's Recalls Roasted Cashews in 16 States Over Salmonella ConcernsSource: FDA

Trader Joe's customers may want to double-check their pantries. The grocery chain's 50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews have been yanked from shelves in 16 states amid concerns they could be tainted with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's announcement on Monday.

The recall, initiated by Wenders LLC, a company based in Dublin, California, involves cashews with the SKU number 37884 and lot numbers T12139 through T12142. While no illnesses have been associated with the recall, the threat of contamination was discovered during routine FDA testing. Affected lot numbers, according to a notice on the FDA's website, include cashews from these lots that should not be consumed and returned to Trader Joe’s for a refund.

Reports from NBC News highlight the rising instances of food recalls, which have recently hit a five-year peak. Although improved detection methods could be behind the uptick, many cases involve undeclared allergens and foreign-material contamination, such as metal and rocks, which could be due to Trader Joe's use of smaller-batch production sources.

The recalled nuts are sold in states ranging from California to Washington, including the southern regions and some Midwest locales; the full list is outlined in advisories by multiple health officials. If ingested, salmonella, a bacterium that can be potentially deadly, triggers symptoms like fever and abdominal pain. Young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are at heightened risk, though most healthy adults typically recover with no treatment needed.

Customers in possession of these nuts should look out for the country of origin, either India or Vietnam and the "Lot No:" printed on the packaging to determine if their product is included in the recall, as reported by FOX LA. Meanwhile, unrelated to Trader Joe's situation, a separate recall on Walmart cashews has also been issued due to undeclared allergens concerns.
