Tragedy struck a Michigan community as a 19-year-old man, identified as Turner Salter, was killed by a flying debris during an explosive fire at a Clinton Township vape supply facility on Monday night. According to The Detroit News, the Macomb County medical examiner confirmed that Salter succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head after being hit by a canister.
Bob Cannon, Clinton Township Supervisor, expressed his outrage during an interview with CBS Detroit, dismayed by the fact that the facility contained illegal stores of butane and nitrous oxide that fueled the catastrophic event. According to the same source, Cannon stressed the threat still posed by remaining tanks, which might explode, and cautioned residents against collecting debris as keepsakes. "It's dangerous. If you do have any materials from this explosion, please call us," he implored.
While fire officials and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the incident, the local fire department has been impeded by foul that is still burning, making it hard to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. Hoodline Detroit previously reported remnants of the fire, fireball canisters, were found embedded in cars and buildings as far as two miles out from the explosion site.
Salter, remembered fondly by Pastor Tim Berlin of the local Faith Baptist Church for his "kind person" and dependability, leaves behind a grieving community set reeling by the destruction. Berlin, whose words about Salter were shared by The Detroit News, announced that a visitation will be held Thursday evening with a funeral service to follow on Friday.
Amid the clean-up and investigation efforts, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido was reported by CBS Detroit as saying his team, along with police and fire departments, is working tirelessly to determine the cause, responsibility, and ensuring the prevention of such tragedies. As the community seeks federal aid for the extensive damages, lament is shared for the loss of a young life cut short by the unforeseen danger that erupted in their midst.
