Chaos erupted on the streets of Forest Hill earlier today as a sinkhole opened up, swallowing a vehicle on the 3000 block of Old Hickory Trail, near Wichita Street. According to a Facebook post by the Forest Hill Police Department, high water damaged the pavement causing the roadway to collapse and create a hazardous pit.
The unsuspecting vehicle got caught in the sudden sinkhole, resulting in a dramatic scene that led to the closure of Wichita Street. The response teams were quick, the vehicle was removed with a tow truck shortly after. Meanwhile, Old Hickory Trail is off-limits as the Forest Hill public works gird to repair the chasm opened up by nature's unforeseen whims — or failures of our infrastructure.
Travelers in the area faced delays and detours as police cordoned off affected roadways. Officials from the public works department have yet to announce a timeline for the repairs on Old Hickory Trail. Until then, commuters should plan for an alternative route or face the uncertainty of these damaged roads.
The city has urged residents and visitors alike to be vigilant as they navigate through this part of town, suggesting that tonight, more than ever, caution is the guardian of the safe traveler. The unpredictability of such incidents poses a stark reminder of the often-fractured ground beneath our wheels — and lives.
