A Warren man faces federal charges for allegedly defacing a Roseville church and a park bathroom with hate-fueled graffiti in 2021, authorities said. David Bluer, 33, is accused of targeting the church and bathroom with swastikas, racist slurs, and threatening messages because of the racial identities of the people who frequented these places.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan informed that Bluer was charged with damaging religious property and interfering with federally protected activities, crimes for which he could face up to two years in the clink, as reported by WWJ Newsradio 950. These charges stem from an incident that occurred shortly before Sunday services on October 25, 2021, at Greater New Life Church, a predominately black congregation.
Details of the hate crime included swastikas and phrases such as "die" and "DaviD KiLLS Ni**ERS" brazenly spray-painted on the church's exterior and a public bathroom at Trombly Park, a site known to be used by black community members. In a statement obtained by Detroit Free Press, prosecutors allege the acts were motivated by racial hatred.
Pastor Darrell Moore of Greater New Life Church described finding the offensive symbols and messages, including the previously unchecked initials "JDS," on a somber Sunday morning — an act that he indicated appeared to be directly targeting the church's predominantly black membership. This perspective was shared by CBS News Detroit, which documented the charges leveled against Bluer.
The FBI Detroit Field Office conducted the investigation, leading to the formal charges against Bluer. As the judicial process unfolds, the community looks to heal from these overt expressions of racism that have marred the places where peace and unity are sought after. The incidents have been condemned widely, with the federal authorities stepping in to address the scourge of racially motivated vandalism that still haunts these neighborhoods.
