Residents in White Settlement have been put on alert about a cunning phone scam by someone impersonating local law enforcement, aiming to swindle money. The White Settlement Police Department warned the community that scammers are using their number — 817-246-7070 — to call locals, posing as the police chief or other department members demanding payment for fake warrants, and asking citizens to engage in undercover work with a mailed package.
The hoax caller deceitfully claims there's an active warrant out for the victim's arrest, and they must settle it by making a payment — a tactic that is, needless to say, not a standard practice of the WSPD. The scammers take it a step further by soliciting residents to conduct undercover operations, adding an element of illusion to their foul play. The White Settlement Police Department clarified they would "never call you to request a payment for an outstanding warrant or request for you to do undercover work."
Attempts like these bank on the fear and uncertainty of the unaware, to craft a believable scenario where the victim feels compelled to act immediately. The White Settlement Police are urging anyone who receives such calls to hang up and contact the department directly to verify any legitimacy of claims. Such vigilance is crucial in thwarting the efforts of these deceivers, who cast a wide net hoping to catch those unprepared.
To safeguard their residents, the WSPD has taken to social media to spread awareness about this scam du jour. They are reminding folks that any communication regarding warrants would happen through official channels and not over the phone. Citing an increased number of such incidents, residents are urged to stay alert, question such deceptive calls, and report them to local authorities to help protect the community and potentially aid in tracking down the scammers.
