A woman is in custody after police say a single gunshot was fired inside Fairlane Mall in Dearborn on a bustling Friday afternoon. According to The Detroit News, the incident occurred when a physical confrontation between two individuals escalated, leading to a third party drawing a firearm and discharging it around 3 p.m.
Officers were dispatched to the 18900 block of Michigan Avenue, and arriving on the scene, it was determined that after the shooting, the suspect made a prompt exit from the mall, fleeing as police swarmed in. The suspect, described as a woman, didn't manage to evade capture for long, being pulled over by the officers shortly after witnesses provided the suspect's vehicle information to the authorities, WXYZ reported.
Miraculously, despite the potential for tragedy in a public space riddled with innocent bystanders amid what could have been a scene of pandemonium, there were no injuries reported. Cpl. Dan Bartok of the Dearborn Police Department indicated that the suspect was arrested, a firearm was recovered, and the mall was temporarily secured following the frightening series of events. While it is fortunate that no one was injured in this case, the reckless actions of those involved threatened the safety of others and damaged the degree of trust and peace of mind that everyone in our community deserves to have when they visit, shop, learn, work, or go about their lives in our city."
