A 3-year-old girl in Philadelphia is in extremely critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to her right eye, authorities reported. The tragic incident unfolded in the East Germantown section of the city on Saturday afternoon. CBS News Philadelphia states that police responded to the Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital shortly after 1:15 PM, where the child was initially taken by a private vehicle.
Following the initial response, the young victim was airlifted to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, according to officials. The shooting is believed to have occurred on the 500 block of East Chelten Avenue, where the police investigation is focused both on the scene and the car that transported the girl to the hospital, as stated by NBC Philadelphia. A man has since been taken into custody and a weapon has been recovered, though the relationship of the man to the victim was not immediately disclosed.
Further details revealed by 6abc indicate the child shot herself in the eye, though information about how she accessed the gun within the home was not provided by authorities. Philadelphia Police spokesman Vona highlighted the critical importance of gun safety and secure storage in homes with children: "There's no reason for us to have unsecured firearms in the house with children," Vona told 6abc.
The incident spotlights ongoing concerns about firearm safety, particularly about children. "Virtually every firearm that you purchase today comes with a gun lock, it's a requirement for the sale of a firearm," Vona said, as per 6abc, emphasizing the need for responsible gun ownership. Local law enforcement agencies and community groups offer free gun locks, an initiative to prevent such tragedies. The police are still investigating why the firearm was not secured. The gravity of the situation has been underscored by law enforcement veterans like Vona, who said, "That is the number one thing, if you choose to own a firearm it is your responsibility to use it safely, to maintain it safely, and to store it safely."
