Armed Suspect Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting in Long Beach, Investigation UnderwaySource: LONG BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT

Chaos erupted in MacArthur Park yesterday as Long Beach officers engaged in a deadly confrontation with an armed suspect, authorities say. The Long Beach Police Department confirmed an officer-involved shooting on the 1300 block of East Anaheim Street at around 4:21 p.m. according to a Long Beach PD press release. While responding to reports of a person with a gun, officers encountered the suspect, described as matching the eyewitness accounts, amongst the park-goers.

Per department accounts, the officers issued numerous commands for the suspect to relinquish the firearm. The suspect, refusing to comply, prompted officers to discharge their weapons. After the shooting, officers rendered medical aid until they were relieved by paramedics who arrived shortly after from the Long Beach Fire Department. Despite the assistance, the injured suspect was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Found at the scene was a loaded firearm, and it was reported that no officers were injured during the incident.

The Long Beach PD has announced that the shooting incident will be undergoing a comprehensive review, as per standard protocol. Further, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will carry out an independent probe into the matters surrounding the officer-involved shooting, which is routine in cases that result in injury or death. Homicide detectives, who appeared at the scene, are leading the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have asked anyone with information that could shed light on this critical situation to step forward. "Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Homicide Detectives Gamboa or Valenzuela at (562) 570-7244," the press release stated. Tips can also be provided anonymously through the 1-800-222-TIPS line, or online via the LA Crime Stoppers' website. As for the body-worn camera footage from officers involved, it is under review and will be released to public scrutiny in due time, affirms Long Beach PD.
