Controversy has erupted over remarks made by Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg comparing the conflict in Gaza to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, suggesting a similar approach to swiftly end the war. After a video of his comments at a Dundee town hall went viral, "We shouldn’t be spending a dime on humanitarian aid," Walberg said in the video, "It should be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Get it over quick," as reported by FOX 2.
The Republican's statements were met with immediate backlash, citing them as genocidal, Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR-Michigan told FOX 2, while calls for condemnation from Michigan's GOP remained unanswered; Muslim leaders and Michigan lawmakers were appalled with U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee branding the comments as "horrific and shocking," according to Michigan Advance and U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin urging Walberg to "try to put himself in the shoes of the many Michiganders who see themselves in the casualties in Gaza."
Walberg, in response to the uproar, clarified his position, stating his comments were metaphorical and not calls for actual nuclear warfare, “I used a metaphor to convey the need for both Israel and Ukraine to win their wars as swiftly as possible, without putting American troops in harm's way," he explained in statements to FOX 2 and The Times of Israel.
Despite this explanation, criticism has continued to come in from various quarters including Justin Amash, former U.S. representative and now Senate candidate, who called the remarks reprehensible especially in light of his own relatives being affected by fighting in Gaza, "For him to suggest that hundreds of thousands of innocent Palestinians should be obliterated, including my own relatives sheltering at an Orthodox Christian church, is reprehensible and indefensible," Amash said on social media, as noted by The Times of Israel. Meanwhile, the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan chapter pronounced Walberg's comments as an outright call for genocide, with serious implications for the dehumanization and resulting violence against Palestinians.
