Austin Braces for Severe Storms, National Weather Service Forecasts Gusty Winds, Possible HailSource: X/NWS Austin/San Antonio

Austin residents might want to keep their raincoats at the ready as a stormy weather front rolls in, bringing potential severe storms this evening, per local weather forecasts.

Austinites can expect mostly cloudy skies today with a high around 87 degrees Fahrenheit and south winds picking up to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon—gusty winds could blow as hard as 25 mph, and the skies will darken in the evening as showers and thunderstorms with a 50 percent chance of precipitation, are anticipated before tapering off around 4 a.m. with overnight lows dropping to about 62 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Adding to the mix, warns of "a summer-like feel" early in the week with drizzle and warm temps in the 70s, but as the day progresses, a broken line of storms is due to arrive; hitting the Hill Country around 5-6 p.m., then the Austin-metro area by around 8-9 p.m., as per KXAN.

The storm front could pack a punch, with the area facing "a level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk" which means damaging winds and large hail are on the table within isolated severe storms, however, total rainfall is expected to remain under a quarter inch for most regions, except where localized heavier bursts occur, and while this bout of inclement weather will leave in its wake cooler climes, for the most part we're looking at more comfortable highs dipping into the 70s for the remainder of the week.

Following the tempestuous evening, the week ahead looks to bring some reprieve, with the forecast calling for a cooler Tuesday, partly sunny skies swiftly transitioning to full-blown sunshine, and a high near 79 degrees, as reported by the National Weather Service. The rest of the week should follow suit with clear nights and sunny days, and hinting at a return to more sanguine weather conditions.
