The 5th Annual Austin Greek Festival has descended upon Central Texas this Memorial Day weekend, promising a colorful immersion into Hellenic culture complete with traditional foods, music, and dance festivities. The event, running from May 24 to May 26 at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, has been the annual hotspot for locals to experience a slice of Greece here in Austin.
From the succulent lamb to the flaky, sweet layers of baklava, the festival isn't holding back on serving up an authentic Greek culinary experience. Homemade dishes are the heart of the event, as volunteers work tirelessly to prep and serve these traditional eats. George Gianakopoulos, president of the Parish Council, "It's all homemade. It's wonderful," as per KVUE This emphasis on community and shared culinary delights is a cornerstone of the festival's appeal.
But it's not just about the food. The festival features an array of entertainment with live performances from Greek dancers and an authentic Greek band flown in straight from Greece, ensuring the party atmosphere is as lively as it gets. Sonia Phocas, the committee organizer, highlighted the spirit of the event in a statement obtained by KVUE, saying "It was a place to share our culture. Let's go out there and share our culture, and if we make some money towards our building, that's great. But if we just show our love for our community around us, that's the main thing."
In addition to the vibrant cultural offerings, festival-goers have the opportunity to explore Byzantine art and iconography through interactive church tours emphasizing the beauty and history of the Orthodox faith. The festival's operating hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday, as noted by CBS Austin. Admission is set at $5 with free entry for children 10 and under, Military, and First Responders with ID.
