Austin's future law enforcers hit the pavement early yesterday morning for a traditional display of solidarity and endurance. The event, known as the Chief's Run and led by Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson, saw 39 cadets from the 151st Cadet Class joining the upper echelons of the Austin Police Department (APD) for a unity run. Their journey started at the Congress Avenue Bridge's southern end and culminated at the Texas State Capitol Peace Officers Memorial.
Commencing before the city had fully awakened, at 7 a.m., the Chief's Run is not just a physical test but a public testament to the communal spirit the APD aims to foster within its ranks. Running alongside the cadets, sporting their distinctive training attire, Assistant Chiefs underscored the importance of cohesion among the officers in training and those they aspire to join.
Upon concluding their run, a statement obtained by the press highlighted the significance of Interim Chief Henderson’s address to the cadets—potential champions of law and community guardians. The run serves as a precursor to the commissioning of cadets during graduation ceremonies set for Friday, April 19, 2024, at The Bannockburn Church located on Brodie Lane.
Details about the forthcoming commemorations have been sparse, but more information is promised to follow. Post-run, with hearts still racing and chests heaving, Interim Chief Henderson and the APD cadets will be available for interviews, offering a glimpse into the department's future and the minds of those who will soon protect and serve Austin's communities.
