Austin's skyline is set to feature a new architectural oddity with a $4 million federal grant greenlighting a 'wishbone' pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake. Shaped like a wishbone and heralding a no-car zone, the bridge will stretch out near the Longhorn Dam in East Austin, hooking up to the Butler Hike and Bike Trail.

The hefty price tag on the bridge, now estimated to be at about $25 million, has been a hurdle for the city planners. But with financial support also lined up from transportation bonds passed in 2016 and 2020, the distinctive three-spoked structure is soon to be more than just an architect's daydream. According to a report by the Austin Monitor, the escalating costs and expanded scope, which now includes several sidewalk improvements, have driven up the budget from early estimates of under $13 million to its current figure.

The center of the bridge will boast a 76-foot-wide plaza, complete with amenities such as benches, bike racks, and shade structures. This hub will also spotlight public artwork by Houston artist Dixie Friend Gay, adding a cultural touch to the commute. The Austin Monitor further highlights that the bridge will serve as a gathering spot, especially for the East Austin community. "You’re going to see people getting proposed to on this bridge. You’re going to see folks playing live music on this bridge. It is going to be a special place,” U.S. Rep. Greg Casar commented at a recent event, sizing up the bridge's potential.

Austin's Transportation and Public Works Director Richard Mendoza told KUT News in a statement, “It has not been the safest environment...We’ve done some mitigating improvements, but it’s not a permanent solution.” as per Austin Monitor report. With the physical separation from motor traffic that the new walkway promises, concerns about safety on the Pleasant Valley Road Bridge, previously a notorious route with a "harrowing passageway," are set to be a thing of the past.

The green light for construction is awaiting a vote from Austin City Council, as a YouTube video reports. If all goes to plan, builders could break ground this summer, with the innovative bridge expected to be completed by 2026, offering Austinites and visitors alike a safe, serene passage over the shimmering waters of Lady Bird Lake.
