San Antonio's skies might serve up a big disappointment instead of the celestial spectacle promised for Monday's total solar eclipse. According to the San Antonio Report, weather forecasters are bracing the city for mostly cloudy skies and potential thunderstorms during the eclipse. The warm front, expected to bring increased moisture and higher chances for precipitation, will likely obstruct views for eager spectators and photographers alike.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Runyen has said the weather outlook was particularly dreary, and lovers of astronomical phenomena are to lower their expectations for a clear viewing experience. "If you’re trying to photograph the eclipse, there's not really anywhere that is that good of an area across Texas," Runyen told the San Antonio Report. Even the Hill Country, a prime location for viewing the eclipse, isn’t expected to fare any better under the forecast conditions.
San Antonio may miss out on the eclipse's full grandeur, but eclipse chasers are still expected to flock to the nearby Hill Country, which lies in the 115-mile-wide path of totality. The Express News reported that places like Fredericksburg and Kerrville are preparing for huge crowds come Monday, despite the city itself not being in the path of totality.
As the event approaches, locals and visitors are quickly to grab approved eclipse glasses, necessary for the safe viewing of the eclipse. Retailers like H-E-B and QuikTrip, as well as local libraries and America’s Best Contacts and Glasses, are go-to spots for latecomers hoping to purchase these essential accessories. These glasses filter out the sun's harmful rays, allowing for a direct, and safe, gaze at the sun, as emphasized by the Express News.
While some remain hopeful for a break in the clouds on Monday, weather models largely agree on an overcast afternoon for South Texas. Despite the less than ideal conditions, the eclipse is anticipated to still darken the skies within the path of totality—a consolation for those who've planned their viewings with precision and passion. Tourist cancellations remain uncertain, though the potential for cloudy weather could incite last-minute location changes, potentially causing traffic and logistical challenges in the path of totality. San Antonio and its surrounding regions brace for the unpredictable weather to play its hand in the day's celestial events.
