Michael Daniels, a 37-year-old man from Washington D.C., with a history of criminal offenses, including the rape of a minor, has been slapped with a 110-month prison term for committing a series of armed robberies across the District during early 2022. This sentencing follows his December 2023 guilty plea to a Hobbs Act robbery charge, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.
Daniels, currently serving an 18-year sentence for the second-degree rape of a 12-year-old girl, launched his D.C. crime spree on January 28, 2022. Over 17 days, he was wearing a mask and brazenly robbed six businesses at gunpoint, which included a dry cleaner, a vape shop, liquor stores, and mobile phone outlets. During his spree, sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras, Daniels was also handed three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay restitution totaling $1,539.
His criminal undertakings targeted essential community businesses, starting with Capitol Hill Cleaning Emporium and culminating with a Boost Mobile store. Daniels's arrest on April 4, 2023, followed efforts by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The joint investigation led to quick action in removing a repeating offender from the streets of the nation's capital, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia.
The prosecution was managed by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nihar Mohanty and Madhu Chugh, who successfully argued the case. Ranging from local businesses to national chains, Daniels menacingly wielded his weapon during the robberies, threatening employees and jeopardizing public safety. Despite his masked attempts to conceal his identity, Daniels was ultimately identified and brought to justice, closing yet another chapter in his lengthy criminal history.
