Culver City Partners with Healthcare in Action to Offer Street-side Medical Services to Homeless PopulationSource: City of Culver City

Culver City has taken a big leap to combat one of its most pressing issues, homelessness, by teaming up with Healthcare in Action (HIA), the street medicine squad known for its hands-on healthcare approach for the homeless. The city expects to bring a slew of medical and social services right to the doorstep of those living on the streets. This innovative move is aimed at improving access to care and ultimately, paving the way for these individuals toward stable housing.

In a recent statement, Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin expressed optimism about the new venture. "By bringing critical medical and social services directly, we are enhancing accessibility and improving outcomes for those who need it most," McMorrin told Culver City. "We are meeting the needs of our community and ensuring that everyone has the resources they need to thrive." Despite the zeal, this initiative is more than just good intentions, as it taps into HIA’s expertise in providing full-scale medical care using mobile medical vans.

HIA, which is a part of the SCAN Group, started its services back in 2021 and now operates 11 mobile teams across Southern California. The services offered by these teams are comprehensive, ranging from primary medical care, addiction treatment, psychiatric assistance, and beyond. In Culver City, the mobile healthcare team plans to show up weekly at hotspots for homeless populations.

Dr. Michael Hochman, CEO of Healthcare in Action, couldn't be more thrilled about the collaboration. "HIA is excited to collaborate with Culver City and introduce our innovative care delivery model to meet the complex and unique needs of the unhoused community," Hochman said, according to the bulletin released by Culver City. The long-term goal is clear — facilitate a transition into stable housing for these individuals, while treating them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The services provided are far-reaching, ensuring that immediate healthcare needs can be met without the delays usually associated with traditional healthcare avenues. These mobile healthcare teams are equipped with a host of facilities including primary care, psychiatric services, addiction counseling, and even medication delivery. Furthermore, they offer a level of care coordination that extends to navigating housing systems and enrolling in beneficial social programs.
