DC cops are on the hunt for a group of carjackers who made off with a rideshare vehicle after sticking a gun in the driver's face last Thursday night, officials say. The heist happened in the 600 block of 9th Street Northeast, just shy of 9 p.m., when one of the brash suspects pulled a firearm and ordered the driver out of the car, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The driver, who luckily emerged from the ordeal unscathed, was forced to surrender their vehicle to the assailants, who promptly sped away. Authorities later located the stolen car, however, the perpetrators remain at large, evading capture, the MPD detailed in a press release. Detectives of MPD’s First District are spearheading the search and have called upon the public to provide any information that could lead to the identification of the suspects.
Thursday's carjacking adds to a growing list of similar crimes in the capital, a troubling trend that has residents and law enforcement on high alert. The MPD has not disclosed any description of the suspects, but they are likely combing through rideshare data and potential surveillance footage in an attempt to track down the individuals responsible for this brazen crime.
The investigation is ongoing and the MPD urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and there's a potential for a reward if the information leads to an arrest and conviction.
