A 22-year-old Detroit man's plan to steal a sleek new Camaro went crashing down, literally, when he rammed the sports car into a dumpster at a General Motors storage lot in Lansing, police said. The botched theft occurred yesterday, with Michigan State Police responding to a security breach at the CN Railroad Auto Distribution Center, where new GM vehicles are temporarily housed.
The suspect, whose bid for a joyride took a dumpster dive around 4:45 a.m., was arrested after a short foot pursuit, as per information obtained by WILX. The thwarted theft unfolded after state police were tipped off by the distribution center's security, who noticed several men cutting through the fence to gain access to the coveted rides.
As the first trooper arrived on scene, he spotted the would-be thief attempting a hasty retreat in the white Camaro. The escape plan, however, backfired as the driver smashed into a large metal dumpster causing total damage to the vehicle, as CBS Detroit reported. The suspect, who sustained injuries in the crash, was then given a ride not in a Camaro, but to a local hospital; after treatment, he's expected to be lodged at the Eaton County Jail, facing charges of unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Other accomplices, who had their sights set on two other Camaros, scattered from the lot as the authorities arrived, as CBS Detroit detailed. This wasn't the first time the lot had been targeted; a similar incident on Feb. 27 saw the disappearance of eight Cadillacs, with police still in pursuit of the perpetrators.
Michigan State Police have been sifting through the details of the case and are appealing to the public for any leads that could point them to the remaining suspects at large. Anyone with information related to the heist or the whereabouts of the fugitive suspects is encouraged to dial into the Lansing Post at 517-322-1907, according to WLNS.
