Detroit has unveiled its own version of the iconic Hollywood sign, aiming to create a warm welcome for visitors coming to the city for the NFL Draft. The "Gateway Sign," stationed along eastbound I-94 between Central Street and Cecil Avenue, stands 10 feet tall but hasn't garnered the "Hollywood" reception city officials might have hoped for.

The installation, a collaboration involving DTE Energy, MDOT, FHWA, and the Fairmont Sign Company, has become the butt of social media jokes, with comments mocking its size and appearance plastering the city's Facebook page. Chiming in with his take, Detroit rapper Gmac Cash released a song with a clear message for city officials in reference to the newly minted sign, stating, “One thing I’mma do, I’mma state the facts. This ain’t the sign we ordered, you can take it back,” as reported by WWJ Newsradio.

Many Detroiters mistakenly believed the sign would resemble an AI-generated image that circulated on Instagram, depicting massive letters on a grassy hill. That image, however, was not linked to the official plans, according to a report by ClickOnDetroit, which revealed that the official rendering is a close match to the actual sign.

Despite the criticism, city officials maintain a positive outlook. Jessica Parker, Detroit's Deputy Chief Operating Officer, told ClickOnDetroit, "I want them to erase all of the old images and thoughts about Detroit." In the lead-up to the 2024 NFL Draft, the city also plans to introduce smaller “Welcome to Detroit” signs at key entry points and is rolling out a series of urban improvements highlighted by Hoodline. These developments include a multimillion-dollar restoration of Hart Plaza's fountain and grounds, set to impress the anticipated 300,000 football fans descending upon Detroit.

The city anticipates that once the dust settles on the NFL Draft, these signs and urban upgrades will leave a lasting impression on visitors and residents alike, solidifying Detroit's efforts to redefine its image as a city facing its future squarely.
