Emu Escapade in Central Austin, Zilker Park Visitors Flock Together to Aid in Bird CaptureSource: Facebook / Austin Animal Center

Chaos unfolded at Zilker Park in Central Austin when two emus decided to take an unscheduled jaunt, sending local authorities into a feathery frenzy. According to the KVUE, the lanky-legged birds were reported gallivanting near the baseball fields, prompting the Austin Animal Center (AAC) to intervene promptly.

The animal escapade began around 7 p.m., inciting multiple calls to the AAC. Officers Figueroa and Hickman responded hot on the heels, only taking about half an hour to arrive on the scene and to soon meet up with the Austin Police Department officers. Together, they managed "to corral the birds and capture them with a large net," AAC detailed.

Post-capture, the wandering emus were held temporarily in outdoor dog kennels at the AAC's truck port, an unconventional stopover for what one might say were two of Austin's most unexpected tourists. Come Friday afternoon, however, the emus were taken to a more suitable locale: the Austin Zoo.

An official statement highlighted AAC's efforts to reunite the birds with their owner, urging anyone with information to reach out. "Anyone who knows the owner of the birds is asked to email [email protected]," they implored. Meanwhile, a video report by the local news channel echoed the sentiment, reinforcing the call for the owner to step forward to claim the emu pair.

As the AAC and zoo officials continue to care for the emus, the hunt for the owner is on—highlighting a day in Zilker Park that locals and authorities won't quickly forget. The birds are safe, sound, and awaiting their next adventure—hopefully, within the confines of a more appropriate habitat.
