The Midwest Invitational Rodeo (MWIR) and the city of Flint are wrangling up a family-friendly rodeo extravaganza, set to gallop into the Genesee County Fairgrounds come June 7 and 8. According to WJRT, this event promises to showcase some of the top rodeo athletes in events including steer wrestling, bull riding, and barrel racing.

Rodeo fans can look forward to a weekend filled with adrenaline-pumping competitions and a variety of onsite festivities. “We’re excited to partner with the MWIR to introduce Flint children and families to an exhilarating performance of skills that turn ordinary people into heroes, showcasing a sport and industry that Flint kids would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience,” Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said, according to the City of Flint. With interactions featuring star rodeo athletes and an opportunity for kids to get up close with rodeo animals, the event aims to open a whole new world of possibility.

As documented by WNEM, the MWIR owner and CEO Nicole Scott states an inclusive goal for the rodeo: to inspire and instill a sense of cultural pride by highlighting Black cowboys and cowgirls with deep roots in the sport. “Our goal is to inspire and instill a sense of cultural pride as we highlight cowboys and cowgirls who carry three generations and over 100 years of history and experience into the ring,” Scott mentioned.

While the main draw for many will be witnessing rugged cowboys and cowgirls going head-to-head against brawny beasts and lithe steeds, the event is rolling out the welcome mat for local foodies and shopaholics with a bustling food truck rally and vendor stands. And not your typical Wild West show, attendees will have the chance to interact with athletes and enjoy Old West reenactments of outlaws and other heroes, according to the information relayed by a WNEM report.

The rodeo doesn't just buck tradition with its entertaining shows but also hits the bullseye with educational prospects. Showcasing the rich history of African American rodeo, the experience is a learning curve for everyone. With a saddle full of activities that include animal exhibitions and skilled trades recruiters, the MWIR is open for Flint-area vendors and sponsors to join the roundup. Those interested, Nicole Scott welcomes them to get involved by reaching out to her or visiting the MWIR's website for more details.

For those chomping at the bit to join the hoedown, tickets are $20 in advance, with the price kicking up to $25 on game day. The gates at the Genesee County Fairgrounds, located at 6130 E. Mt. Morris Rd. in Mt. Morris Township, swing open on Friday at 5 p.m. and on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the action starting at 7 p.m. on both days.
