A former Warren, Michigan, police officer has admitted to brutally assaulting a young arrestee in an incident that was caught on tape last year. Matthew Rodriguez, 49, entered a guilty plea Monday for the excessive force used on Jaquwan Smith, 19, during booking on June 13, 2023, according to information from the U.S. Department of Justice, as reported by the Department of Justice.
Caught on video, Rodriguez can be seen aggressively punching Smith in the head, shoving him against a wall, then slamming and striking him again. The former officer, in a move to possibly conceal his actions, filed a false report that aimed to affect the investigation, an admission made during his plea hearing. The assault footage was released by the Warren Police Department, which led to Rodriguez's termination on June 26, 2023, as detailed by FOX 2 Detroit.
This case has highlighted the chasm often found between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to serve. In a statement obtained by the Department of Justice, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke condemned the officer's actions, stating, "This police officer carried out a violent assault on a man who was doing nothing to harm or endanger him and then tried to cover up his crime." Clarke emphasized that officers will be held accountable when they trample on constitutional rights, further adding that such abuses "erode trust between the police and the community they are sworn to protect and serve."
Rodriguez is now facing up to 10 years in federal prison for his actions. His sentencing is set for August 20. The case was investigated by the FBI Detroit Field Office, signifying the lengths to which abuse of power will be pursued. U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison echoed Clarke's sentiments, saying "The defendant’s actions in this case were shocking and flagrantly violate the standards of conduct we expect of all sworn law enforcement officers," according to the Department of Justice's announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Moran and Trial Attorney Alec Ward will be responsible to prosecute the case.
The guilty plea by Rodriguez serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle for justice and accountability within police departments nationwide. Smith, who sustained injuries from the brutal beating, represents just one of the many individuals who have found themselves on the receiving end of unjustified police violence. The legal proceedings to follow will further determine the consequences of such a breach of trust and duty by a member of law enforcement.
