In a world where misinformation spreads faster than facts, the Internal Revenue Service is cracking down on bad tax advice running rampant on social media. Platforms like TikTok are hotspots for scammers and uninformed users pushing misleading tax tips that could spell disaster for honest taxpayers, according to the IRS.

The IRS' warning comes as part of the "Dirty Dozen" tax scam series, an annual effort to educate taxpayers on frauds and schemes that pose financial and personal risks. Misuse of forms, such as W-2, and bogus advice on how to manipulate figures to inflate tax returns are among the dangerous suggestions being peddled online. These scams could lead to identity theft, tax problems, and potentially, severe civil and criminal penalties.

"Social media is an easy way for scammers and others to try encouraging people to pursue some really bad ideas, and that includes ways to magically increase your tax refund," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said, in a statement obtained by the IRS. He cautioned the public against trusting anonymous tips over professional advice when it comes to tax matters.

To avoid falling prey to these cons, taxpayers should use IRS.gov for instructions on proper form usage and fact-check information against the agency's official social media. The risks of these social media schemes are serious, including the possibility of a $5,000 penalty for filing a frivolous return or even criminal prosecution.
