The Los Angeles Fire Department is currently grieving the sudden loss of Jacob Fuerte, a recruit firefighter who tragically lost his life early this morning in what appears to be a hit-and-run incident. The 22-year-old was en route to training at the Drill Tower Academy when the accident occurred on the NB 101 freeway near Vineland Avenue in Studio City. After being struck by another vehicle, LAFD firefighter paramedics were dispatched to the scene but despite their efforts, were unable to save one of their own.

Fuerte had joined the LAFD on February 12, according to a report by the department, and was in the middle of an extensive 20-week training program. The fallen recruit is survived by his father, a veteran firefighter/paramedic with the LAFD for 17 years, two sisters, and a brother. The young firefighter grew up in the LAFD family, fully aware of the sacrifice and dedication required in the profession he aspired to join. In a statement released by, LAFD, Fire Chief Kristin Crowley expressed the department's profound sorrow, "I received devastating news this morning that one of our colleagues lost their life tragically. He had just started his firefighting career, which requires courage, bravery, and prioritizing others before oneself."

The California Highway Patrol is actively conducting an investigation into the circumstances of Fuerte's death. CHP is urging the public to come forward with any information that could help with the inquiry.
