Jewish organizations across Pennsylvania found themselves on high alert Tuesday after receiving hoax bomb threats via email. The unnerving messages targeted numerous synagogues and related facilities, prompting swift evasive actions by community leaders and law enforcement. According to a statement obtained by CBS News Philadelphia, the general Jewish Federation mailbox received a chilling email on Tuesday, with threats also landing in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg, to blow up Jewish institutions.
In a deliberate response to not further risk safety, the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley quickly contacted local police, fire departments, and the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office. They also made sure to inform synagogues and partnering agencies about the threat. Facilities such as the Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley and the Jewish Federation itself had to be evacuated while the threat's legitimacy was investigated. The disruption even pushed an Early Childhood Education program outdoors, where kids had to engage in an aerobics class under the open sky.
The gravity of these threats is underscored by a recent statement from the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia shared with Action News. They referenced collaboration with the Secure Community Network (SCN) and law enforcement, stating, "After receiving notification of these threats - The Jewish Federation and Secure Community (SCN) Network immediately notified our law enforcement partners and institutional leadership," echoing the sentiment of a community under siege, as per ABC Philadelphia.
This incident is yet another in a disturbing upward trend of antisemitic threats and actions, especially prominent in the Philadelphia area. With FBI Director Chris Wray's recent warning about foreign terrorist groups urging attacks on U.S. Jewish communities, the climate of fear has only intensified. According to Wray, incidents like the one on "October 7" are likely to "feed a pipeline of radicalization and mobilization for years to come." As these unsettling events unfold, Congress is debating the re-authorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act—a measure that allows the government to collect communications from non-Americans overseas, who communicate on U.S. platforms, without a warrant.
After a thorough investigation on Tuesday, the threats targeting the Jewish facilities in Pennsylvania were deemed not credible. Yet, the emotional and psychological toll of such hoaxes remains incalculable, underscoring the need for continued vigilance within these communities. As organizations like SCN and the Jewish Federations across Pennsylvania grapple with these incidents, they serve as a reminder of the persistent specter of antisemitism that looms over not only the Keystone State but the whole country.
