Philly residents and commuters are bracing for possible flooding and a soggy end to the workweek, as forecasters warn of increasing rainfall and thunderstorms. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, NJ, has issued a coastal flood advisory for parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including the Philadelphia area, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways through early Wednesday morning.

The advisory, which remains in effect until 6 AM EDT Wednesday, targets Gloucester and Camden counties in New Jersey, and Delaware and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania. According to the National Weather Service, "flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways" during such events, leading to "some partial or full road closures are possible." The Delaware River at Philadelphia is forecasted to experience minor flooding, with tide levels reaching up to 1.6 feet above normal.

The wet conditions are set to continue throughout the week, with a 40% chance of showers on Wednesday and a jump to a 70% likelihood on Thursday when thunderstorms are also possible. The wind is expected to pick up significantly as well, with south winds of 15 to 20 mph in the forecast. This could set the stage for isolated instances of tree damage and power outages, especially on Thursday when windy conditions are most severe.

By Thursday night, showers and potentially a thunderstorm are deemed certain, bringing an estimated half to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall, the NWS cautions. Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautionary and preparedness measures to protect flood-prone property. Despite the expected downpours, the outlook brightens towards the weekend with mostly sunny conditions anticipated by Saturday.
