Four suspects have been nabbed in a drug smuggling scheme targeting a correctional facility, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office revealed. The arrests stemmed from a February operation uncovering a plot where narcotics were trafficked into a jail via the United States Postal Service.

The detailed investigation led to the apprehension of Melissa Troncoso, a 32-year-old from Indio found with methamphetamine, heroin, and concentrated cannabis in her residence and is now facing multiple drug-related charges along with child endangerment, her two juveniles were also found at the scene and items consistent with smuggling activities were recovered during a search warrant service on April 24, 2024. Eric Guzman, Christian Kong, and Daniel Mendez, all previously incarcerated for separate offenses, were also arrested on charges of conspiracy to smuggle narcotics into the facility.

According to the official release by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, the series of arrests serve as a part of an overarching effort to choke the flow of drugs into jail systems. The initiative includes vigilant deputy searches, advanced technology like the "Tek-84" scanner, and thorough investigations to counteract this illicit trade.
