San Antonio Marks National Public Health Week with SA Forward Plan and Community FestSource: City of San Antonio

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) has kicked off its National Public Health Week (NPHW) with a slate of programming and the introduction of its new strategic growth plan, SA Forward. While health advocates across the nation rally to improve public health, the folks in San Antonio are notching up their commitment with scholarships honoring a local health pioneer and a vibrant fest for community well-being.

In memory of its former director, Dr. Fernando A. Guerra, scholarships will be awarded to two university students pursuing careers in public health. "This year, we look forward to our ongoing partnership with the San Antonio Area Foundation and local universities to honor the life and dedication of Dr. Fernando A. Guerra, an exemplary leader in public health," Metro Health Director Dr. Claude A. Jacob stated in a news release obtained by KSAT. Daily programming will align with the American Public Health Association's themes, tackling everything from climate change to healthy neighborhoods.

The SA Forward plan comes in response to lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to address some of the city’s most pressing health issues. It’s designed with a community-informed approach to tackle everything from access to healthcare to mental health and community resilience. "The SA Forward health plan outlines the work we will do together to make San Antonio a more resilient and healthier place for all to enjoy,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg told the public, as reported by the City of San Antonio's website.

Adding a practical spin to the festivity, Metro Health is hosting a Public Health Fest on April 4 at Mission Marquee Plaza. San Antonians can look forward to free resources like vaccinations, health screenings, and information on Metro Health programs, according to KSAT. As detailed by Sa's forward plan, the district is not just throwing a party. With initiatives including anything from diabetes prevention to violence prevention lined up, it's clear that Metro Health is doubling down on its mission to foster a healthier San Antonio.

The district has also launched a new website in partnership with mySidewalk, an interactive platform that features over 50 data indicators to help residents understand social determinants of health and disease burden in their neighborhoods. "These programs and services are in line with Metro Health’s mission of preventing illness, promoting healthy behaviors, and protecting against health hazards throughout our community through education, collaboration, and key services," Metro Health Director Claude A. Jacob articulated to the community through the department's planning announcement.
