San Marcos is basking in the spotlight after being named by Keep Texas Beautiful as one of the ten Texas cities to win the 2024 Governor’s Community Achievement Awards (GCAA), a move that further solidifies its reputation as a standout community dedicated to beautification and environmental efforts. In a statement by the San Marcos City officials, it was unveiled that the city will receive a tidy sum of $270,000, geared towards a landscaping endeavor in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation along a state road, with the nitty-gritty of the project to be disclosed later this spring.

The city’s enhancement initiatives and community-supported projects won over the judges, who evaluated contestants on criteria spanning public awareness to illegal dumping enforcement, Amy Thomaides, San Marcos Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager, told San Marcos press, “This award really comes to show how much our community cares about keeping San Marcos beautiful, green, and clean.” Not resting on its laurels, the community has once before seized this accolade in 2012 which resulted in a gateway project at State Highway 80 and Interstate 35 with a distinctive wave and rock design stamping its presence on the retaining walls along the interstate.

In an era where environmental preservation and community collaboration have become increasingly pivotal, this award reinforces the city’s commitment to those very ideals, as echoed by City Manager Stephanie Reyes in an interview, “This honor brings us a lot of pride here in San Marcos, we’re lucky to live in such a beautiful place and thankful for the collaborative efforts of everyone in our community who works hard to keep it clean and protect our natural resources.”

Since the inception of the GCAA by Keep Texas Beautiful in partnership with the Office of the Texas Governor in 1969, and with the monetary boost from TxDOT since 1985, the initiative has allocated a whopping $47 million into 261 projects, signifying a significant investment into not just beautifying but nurturing sustainable communities, other winners that joined San Marcos in this achievement, include Texas cities like Argyle, Garland, Pearland, and Del Rio, all of which have showcased exemplary commitment to a cleaner, greener environment.
